Japan Has a Few Surprises…

3 Unexpected Places to Visit in Japan

Sand dunes, art islands and houses on the water

You probably picture Tokyo’s bright lights, Kyoto’s temples and bullet trains. But sand dunes stretching towards the sea? An island filled with art? A village where boats have their own downstairs parking?

Tottori, Naoshima and Ine are three unusual places to visit in Japan, each offering a reason to explore beyond the familiar stops.

Tottori: Sand Dunes Beside the Sea

Just outside Tottori City, enormous sand dunes roll towards the Sea of Japan. Climb the sandy slopes and the view opens into sea, sky and wind-shaped ridges, a striking change from Japan’s busy city streets.

For anyone who enjoys unusual landscapes, this is somewhere to wander and take photographs. Allow time: walking uphill through sand is slower work than it looks.

Naoshima: An Island Full of Art

In the Seto Inland Sea, Naoshima brings contemporary art into a coastal setting. Benesse House Museum features works by internationally recognised artists, including pieces created specifically for their surroundings.

You don’t need to be an art expert to enjoy exploring somewhere that gives you so many reasons to stop and look.

Just check ferry connections, museum opening days and booking requirements before travelling.

Ine: Boathouses at the Water’s Edge

In northern Kyoto Prefecture, around 230 traditional boathouses line Ine’s bay. Known as funaya, their lower levels were built to shelter boats and fishing equipment.

Some offer accommodation, letting you stay beside the water and discover a coastal side of Kyoto beyond its famous temples. Ine has no railway station, so allow for the road journey from the Amanohashidate area.

Which Would You Add to Your Trip?

You don’t need to squeeze all three into one holiday. Pick the place that sparks your curiosity and give it time.

Tokyo and Kyoto might first draw you to Japan. Somewhere you hadn’t heard of could become the part you keep talking about afterwards.
