America’s Hidden Gems Worth Knowing About

America’s Hidden Gems Worth Knowing About

When you think of a trip to the USA, chances are your mind goes straight to New York, Florida, California or Las Vegas.

And, of course, there’s a reason these places are so popular. But America is huge and some of its best experiences are found well beyond the usual tourist trail.

From charming Southern cities and sleepy coastal towns to desert landscapes and seriously impressive wilderness, there are plenty of places that don’t always get the attention they deserve.

Here are a few we think are worth knowing about.

Savannah, Georgia – Southern charm at its best

If you want to experience the American South, Savannah is a pretty special place to start.

There’s something incredibly easy-going about this city. Its historic streets are lined with huge oak trees draped in Spanish moss, beautiful old buildings and little squares that seem to invite you to slow down and stay awhile.

Then there’s the food. Think classic Southern cooking, fresh seafood and plenty of places worth sitting down for a long lunch.

Go for: Southern charm, history, food and one of the prettiest city centres in the USA.

Portland, Maine – New England without the crowds

Not to be confused with Portland, Oregon, this little coastal city in Maine is one of those places that tends to surprise people.

Its Old Port is full of cobbled streets, independent shops and restaurants, while the waterfront is exactly what you’d hope for from a New England escape, fishing boats, lighthouses and plenty of fresh seafood.

And if you visit in autumn? Even better.

The surrounding countryside puts on one of the most spectacular displays of autumn colour in the country.

Go for: Coastal views, lobster, charming streets and classic New England scenery.

Charleston, South Carolina – The city you’ll wish you’d discovered sooner

Charleston may not be a secret, but it still feels like one compared with America’s bigger-name cities.

Pastel-coloured houses, historic streets, grand porches and palm-lined avenues give the city a character all of its own.

And then there’s the food. Charleston is the kind of place where you can plan your entire day around where you’re going to eat and we wouldn’t blame you.

Spend your mornings exploring, your afternoons by the water and your evenings discovering the city’s restaurants.

Go for: Architecture, history, Southern food and a seriously good atmosphere.

Santa Fe, New Mexico – America with a completely different flavour

Santa Fe is proof that America can look completely different depending on where you go.

With its distinctive adobe buildings, colourful art scene and dramatic desert surroundings, it feels worlds away from the skyscrapers of New York or the beaches of California.

Spend a few days exploring galleries, wandering through the historic centre and sampling New Mexican food and yes, you really do need to try the chile.

Outside the city, the landscapes are just as impressive.

Go for: Art, culture, incredible food and landscapes that feel a world away.

Bend, Oregon – For the outdoorsy ones

If your perfect holiday involves getting outside rather than spending hours in a museum, Bend should be on your radar.

Surrounded by the Cascade Mountains, forests, rivers and volcanic landscapes, this is somewhere you come to properly switch off and get out into nature.

Hike, kayak, cycle, ski or simply enjoy the scenery — there’s no shortage of ways to spend your time.

And unlike some of America’s better-known outdoor destinations, Bend still has that feeling of being slightly under the radar.

Go for: Mountains, outdoor adventures and spectacular scenery.

Door County, Wisconsin – Small-town America at its finest

This is one for anyone who loves discovering the places that don’t necessarily make the front page of every guidebook.

Door County stretches out between Green Bay and Lake Michigan, with charming little towns, quiet beaches, forests, lighthouses and scenic roads.

It’s particularly lovely in autumn, when the trees turn brilliant shades of red, orange and gold.

There’s no need for a packed itinerary here. Hire a car, pick a direction and see where the day takes you.

Go for: Scenic drives, small towns, autumn colours and a slower pace

Alaska – The USA’s wild side

Alaska might be on plenty of bucket lists, but we still think it deserves a place here.

Because once you see it, you understand why.

Glaciers, towering mountains, vast forests and wildlife roaming in their natural surroundings make Alaska feel almost too dramatic to be real.

It’s the kind of destination where you’ll find yourself stopping constantly just to take another photo — and knowing full well it won’t quite capture what you’re actually seeing.

America is bigger than the usual DESTINATIONS

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with ticking off New York, Florida, California or Las Vegas. But if you’ve already been, don’t assume you’ve seen America.

You really haven’t.

There are colourful Southern cities, rugged coastlines, desert landscapes, mountain towns and vast wilderness waiting to be explored.

Sometimes the best trips start with looking somewhere you hadn’t originally considered.
