From Johannesburg to Victoria Falls: An Unforgettable African Adventure with Croisi Europe
There are some journeys that stay with you forever, and this incredible nine-day adventure through South Africa, Botswana, Namibia, and Zimbabwe is undoubtedly one of them. From fascinating history and vibrant cities to extraordinary wildlife encounters and breathtaking landscapes, every day brought something new and unforgettable.

Day 1: Discovering Johannesburg and Soweto
My journey began at the elegant 54 on Bath Hotel in Johannesburg. After meeting the group at 11:30 a.m, we enjoyed lunch before heading to the renowned Apartheid Museum. Opened in 2001, the museum is internationally recognised as the first museum dedicated to telling the story of South Africa’s twentieth-century history, particularly the apartheid era. Walking through the exhibits was both moving and educational, offering a deeper understanding of the country’s past.

Later, we embarked on a panoramic tour of Johannesburg and a colourful drive through Soweto. Johannesburg truly is a city of contrasts, the richest city in Africa, filled with towering skyscrapers, immense wealth, and visible social disparities. Yet despite these contrasts, the city has an incredible energy and atmosphere that is impossible not to admire.
After arriving back at our hotel and enjoying dinner, I settled in for the night, excited for the adventures ahead.
Day 2: Into the Wilderness of Botswana
The morning began with a flight from Johannesburg to Kasane, Botswana. From the airport, we boarded a small private boat that transferred us to our CroisiEurope lodge. The journey itself felt like a safari. Along the Chobe and its channels, we spotted countless birds, hippos lounging in the water, and crocodiles basking in the sunshine.

The Cascades Lodge was absolutely beautiful, perfectly positioned in the heart of the wilderness. Upon arrival, we were warmly welcomed by the staff with champagne and traditional singing before settling into our comfortable accommodation. As darkness fell, the sounds of nature surrounded us, creating a sense of complete tranquillity.

Day 3: Chobe National Park Safari

Today was dedicated entirely to exploring the famous Chobe National Park. We set out by jeep, venturing through a landscape that hosts more than a quarter of Africa’s elephant population. Every turn seemed to reveal another incredible wildlife sighting.

After we boarded a private boat enjoying lunch in the heart of nature, and cruised along the Chobe River towards Sedudu Island and its marshes. Once again, we encountered numerous hippos, but the true highlight came when we found ourselves alongside a group of elephants bathing in the river right beside our boat.
Watching these magnificent creatures play and splash in the water from such close range was an unforgettable experience and one of the most special wildlife moments of the trip.
Day 4: Namibian Culture and a Zambezi Sunset
Today we crossed into Namibia to visit authentic villages on Impalila Island. It was fascinating to learn about local traditions, customs, and daily life while exploring the traditional Namibian homes.

After returning to the lodge for lunch, we spent the afternoon fishing. It was tremendous fun, filled with laughter and friendly competition. As the day drew to a close, we embarked on one final sunset cruise along the Zambezi River. The sky transformed into brilliant shades of gold, orange, and crimson as the sun disappeared below the horizon. Later that evening, our guide shared stories about the island’s traditions and history, adding another layer of appreciation for this remarkable region.
Day 5: Flying to Lake Kariba
After one final water safari around the Chobe area, we enjoyed lunch before making our way to Kasane Airport. The next stage of our adventure took us aboard private planes bound for Lake Kariba.

The flight itself was spectacular, revealing endless wilderness and ever-changing landscapes below. Upon landing, our transfer became an unexpected mini game drive through Matusadona National Park. Along the way, we spotted zebras, elephants, and impalas.
Then came an incredible sight: our ship, the African Dream, anchored at the edge of the vast lake and surrounded by hundreds of hippos. It was a truly dramatic welcome to one of Africa’s largest man-made lakes.

Day 6: The Mysteries of Lake Kariba
At sunrise, we began sailing through the magical landscapes of Lake Kariba. One of the most striking features of the lake is the eerie forest of drowned trees rising from the water, creating a mysterious and almost dreamlike atmosphere.

We explored the waterways of the lake on the edge of Matusadona National Park aboard a small boat. winding through narrow channels and secluded inlets. Everywhere we looked there were hippos, crocodiles, Elephants and an astonishing variety of birdlife.
The afternoon was spent cruising before heading out once more at sunset. Just when we thought the day could not get any better, we spotted a male and female lion walking along the riverbank. Watching them stroll peacefully through the golden evening light was an incredibly special moment that none of us will ever forget.
Day 7: Exploring Matusadona National Park
This morning we ventured deeper into the area surrounding Matusadona National Park. Covering more than 1,400 square kilometres, the park is home to elephants, buffalo, hippos, crocodiles, and countless bird species.

The park’s history is closely linked to the creation of Lake Kariba. During the flooding that followed the dam’s construction, thousands of animals were rescued through Operation Noah and relocated to safer areas within the park. Learning about this remarkable conservation effort added an important historical perspective to our wildlife experiences.

Although we hoped to encounter big cats again, simply being immersed in such untouched wilderness was reward enough. Later, during a round-table discussion on board, we learned more about the lake’s creation, ecology, and the communities that call it home.
Day 8: Kariba Dam and Victoria Falls
As dawn broke, we sailed towards Kariba before disembarking for a visit to the impressive Kariba Dam. Built in 1955, the dam created Lake Kariba and today provides around seventy percent of Zimbabwe’s electricity. We also learned about the legend of Nyami Nyami, the river god believed to inhabit the waters of the Zambezi.
From Kariba, we boarded private planes bound for Victoria Falls. Upon arrival, we enjoyed a memorable lunch cruise on the Zambezi River upstream from the falls.

The afternoon was spent relaxing at our hotel, the beautiful Victoria Falls Safari Lodge, where views stretched across the surrounding savannah. Watching wildlife wander through the landscape from the comfort of the lodge was the perfect way to unwind before our Boma dinner. Fun, laughter and dancing was a perfect way to end our final night.
Day 9: The Smoke That Thunders
The final morning of the journey brought us to one of Africa’s greatest natural wonders: Victoria Falls.
After breakfast, we set off on foot to explore the falls. Nothing can truly prepare you for the sheer scale and power of this magnificent spectacle. As the mighty Zambezi River plunged over the cliffs, clouds of mist rose high into the sky, giving rise to the local name, “The Smoke That Thunders.”

Standing before the widest waterfall in the world was a fitting finale to an extraordinary adventure. Over the past nine days, I had explored vibrant cities, learned about fascinating cultures, sailed through untamed wilderness, and witnessed some of Africa’s most incredible wildlife. From elephants bathing beside our boat to lions strolling along the riverbank and the thunderous beauty of Victoria Falls, this journey delivered memories that will last a lifetime.
Africa’s magic lies not only in its landscapes and wildlife but also in the stories, people, and moments of wonder found around every corner. This was truly the adventure of a lifetime with Croisi Europe. Brush up on your Croisi Europe cruises knowledge here or view our South Africa offers.
