FAM Trip Diaries: Exploring Scotland’s Wild Isles Aboard the National Geographic Endurance

Team Onboard with Travelpack

Last week, I had the incredible privilege of joining our BDM, Michele, and our Director of Cruise, Emma, on a voyage with Lindblad Expeditions. We embarked on the Scotland’s Wild Isles: Shetlands, Orkneys and Inner Hebrides itinerary, spending eight exhilarating days exploring the rugged, dramatic landscapes of our own backyard.

From the picturesque fishing villages of the Isle of Skye to the ancient Viking ruins of the Shetlands and the spectacular seabird colonies on Northern Ireland’s Rathlin Island, this voyage was an absolute masterclass in the art of expedition cruising. Our Expedition Leader, Jonathan Fuhrmann, summarised it perfectly when he said, “The trip evolves as the adventure unfolds.”

This was proven true during our visit to the Isle of Skye. Our morning itinerary had originally included a dry landing and a hike, but due to unsuitable conditions at the shore, the expedition team seamlessly adapted the itinerary.

Instead, we were offered a Zodiac cruise along the Isle’s majestic coastline or the option to head out kayaking. Thanks to the team’s total flexibility, we ended up having an even more incredible and unique experience than originally planned!

Beyond being a fantastic opportunity to experience the Lindblad brand first-hand, it opened my eyes to the incredible exploration potential right here in the UK. Having previously only visited Edinburgh and Lockerbie, this voyage showcased Scotland in an entirely new light.

For our agent partners, this itinerary is a golden selling opportunity. It is the ultimate luxury “staycation” for discerning clients who want to elevate their domestic holidays, reduce their air travel, and enjoy an eco-conscious adventure without sacrificing five-star comfort.

Here is an inside look at our journey and why the National Geographic Endurance needs to be on your clients’ radar.

Redefining the “Expedition” Ship

Before this trip, my idea of an “expedition ship” leaned toward the rustic—vessels tailored purely for utility and exploration. The National Geographic Endurance completely shattered that misconception.

Named in honour of explorer Ernest Shackleton, she is the most advanced ice-class expedition ship afloat (PC5 Category A). Her most striking exterior feature is the patented X-Bow® design. Not only does this guarantee the smoothest, quietest, and most comfortable ride in all conditions, but it also allows the ship to glide effortlessly into remote regions.

Inside, the ship has the look and feel of a sleek, private yacht. It features plush interiors and extensive facilities, including saunas, a gym, and a yoga studio. What sets it apart from typical high-end products—where guests are often closeted away from the outside world—is its constant connection to nature. You can enjoy panoramic views of Scotland’s rugged coastlines while working out in the morning, or take a moment for quiet contemplation in the hammock on your private balcony.

The all-inclusive touches immediately make you feel at home: a fully restocked mini-bar, wine waiting in the cabin, a reusable water bottle, a beautiful electric blue expedition jacket, and a branded notepad to journal your daily reflections.

Unique Features: A Night in the Top-Deck Igloos

One of the most extraordinary and unique features of the National Geographic Endurance is the pair of glass igloos located on the top deck. Every guest on board has the opportunity to put their name down for a chance to spend the night in one, and it is an absolute must-do.

This is the ultimate glamping experience at sea. The igloos are meticulously prepared for the chillier maritime nights, fitted with plush bathrobes, heavy-duty dry robes, and comforting hot water bottles to ensure you stay perfectly cozy.

Falling asleep directly under a canopy of stars is pure magic, but waking up to a vivid sunrise illuminating the rugged Scottish Isles is an absolute showstopper. To top it all off, you are treated to breakfast in bed while taking in the spectacular, uninterrupted panoramic vistas. It is an unforgettable, once-in-a-lifetime moment that serves as a massive selling point for your luxury clients.

Art with a Social Conscience

Even within the lap of luxury, the Endurance maintains a strong ecological and social conscience. The ship features a permanent, ship-wide polar art installation called Change, curated by acclaimed artist Zaria Forman.

Incorporating works from over 35 artists across all decks, the installation documents climate change and exploration. It was incredible to see pieces like Martin Wittfooth’s “We Rose At Dusk” up close. As Forman notes, the goal is for guests to be “so moved by the landscapes that lay in front of them, they will want to protect and preserve them.”

Ethical, Elevated, and Energizing Dining

Dining onboard completely breaks the mould of traditional, overly decadent cruise buffets. Instead, the culinary program is thoughtfully designed to minimise food waste and celebrate local regions.

  • Charlie’s Table: This seven course elevated dining experience continues the ship’s ecological ethos with ethically sourced dishes curated to celebrate the produce of the regions we travelled through.
  • Fuel for Adventure: At every meal, there were excellent light options. This is crucial for an active cruise; we never felt sluggish after eating, leaving us perfectly energised for a hike or a Zodiac run.
  • Exceptional Service: The staff’s attention to detail was staggering. By day two, they had memorised our names and our exact orders (including my rather obnoxiously specific salad order). They also offer fantastic, adaptable non-alcoholic drink options – with the cranberry and apple juice, The “Crapple” drink, becoming a staple amongst our group (though I doubt that name will stick if added to the menu.)
  • Afternoon Tea: Served in the C-Green Bar and Restaurant on the Observation Deck, this was the perfect mid-afternoon treat alongside their light breakfast offerings.

The Expedition Experience: Experts & Exploration

The excursions and the onboard team are where Lindblad truly shines. This is the perfect product for the client who craves a sense of adventure, but wants the reassurance of expert support.

Zodiac Cruising: I admit, I was a bit trepidatious about boarding a Zodiac at first. However, the comprehensive briefing and the team’s instruction on the “sailor’s grip” made us feel incredibly safe and secure. The Zodiacs were a truly remarkable way to explore the Scottish coastlines and get up close to the local wildlife, including seals and the magnificent puffin colonies in Unst.

Active Options: Every excursion offered variations—from gentle walks to strenuous, long hikes—meaning every fitness level was accommodated. A standout moment was the spectacular wild hike in Loch Coruisk. Set in the heart of the Cuillin mountains on the Isle of Skye, the raw, dramatic scenery of the jagged peaks and the isolated freshwater loch provided an unforgettable trekking experience.

Engaging Lectures: The expedition staff and naturalists provided in-depth insights into our destinations. The lectures took place in the Ice Lounge, so we enjoyed spectacular panoramic views whilst learning. The lectures were never dry; they were fun, highly engaging, and paired perfectly with evening whiskey and honey tastings!

We enjoyed talks on the geological evolution of the region, Viking history, and seminars from National Geographic Explorer guest lecturers.

Comprehensive Pre and Post Tour briefings: Each evening, before dinner, we would gather to learn more about the regions we had visited that day – always offering a new insight and perspective on what we had experienced. Moreover, we would discover the excitement which lay ahead – always caveated with the interchangeable nature of an expedition cruise.

An Open Culture: There is no stiff formality here. We had an open-bridge policy to chat with the Captain, and the Lindblad team dined with guests and mingled in the lounge each evening.

Photography Guidance: National Geographic photography experts are on hand to help you use your camera equipment, ensuring you leave with professional-grade memories. The expert on board was Brooke Juhula, who ran brilliant, hands-on sessions. At the end of the voyage, guests were asked to submit their top 5 pictures, and we enjoyed a wonderful presentation during our final debrief to celebrate all the spectacular sights we had experienced together.

Unique Spaces to Socialize and Unwind

When not exploring (or sleeping in the igloos!), the ship offers brilliant spaces to relax. You can swap stories in the Ice Lounge, take a dip in the top-deck hot tub, gear up in the Base Camp, or seek out peace and tranquility in the stunning library.
