Beyond the Minotaur: My Journey Through Knossos, Truffle Oil & Endless Private Pools

One of the things I love most about my job is that it takes me to some truly incredible places — and last week, I was lucky enough to stay at the 5 Star Nana Princess in Crete.

After yet another delayed flight, I was whisked away in my own private luxury transfer and taken straight to this stunning hotel. No queues at reception — instead, I was invited to sink into a velvet sofa, offered a cooling towel, dried fruit, and a chilled glass of fizz while I signed my check-in documents with a personalised pen presented in a leather-bound folder.

Then it was straight into a golf buggy to be escorted to my suite, complete with a private pool, chilled wine, water, and canapés waiting to welcome me. This is how five-star service should begin, and it didn’t stop there… The list of special touches is endless.

Every room here has a private pool and is impeccably designed to ensure maximum privacy and landscaped sea views. All the suites are beautifully appointed with high-quality furnishings and advanced technology, with everything available at the press of a button.

The culinary experiences were unforgettable. On the day of arrival, our first meal and cooking demonstration was at Meat-In Point, dining by the dazzling pool. If you love meat, this is the place for you. The à la carte menu was a treat, featuring dishes like Black Angus Beef Tartare, Lamb Rump Kontosouvli, and Filet Wagyu, complemented by fresh salads and grilled vegetables with a hint of truffle oil.

Breakfast at Carpe Diem, the main restaurant, was equally memorable. We were warmly greeted on arrival and escorted to our seats, where hot drinks and fresh juices awaited. A live violinist provided the perfect soundtrack to our meal. The breakfast spread was exceptional, with hot and cold dishes, fresh seasonal produce, energising fitness options, and the indulgent Cretan Corner. The wine list, featuring 160 international and regional selections handpicked by award-winning sommelier Nikos Giannopoulos, allowed guests to pair meals — breakfast, lunch, or dinner — with exceptional wines.

The next morning, we explored the rich history of the Palace of Knossos, Europe’s oldest city and the centre of the Minoan civilisation, with advanced architecture, colourful frescoes, and legendary links to King Minos and the Minotaur myth. Afterwards, we headed into Heraklion, wandering through its lively streets.

The city is a delightful mix of old and new, with narrow cobbled lanes lined with boutique shops, traditional cafes, and local markets. After our wanderings we were led to an incredible lunch at Peskesi, a must-visit for authentic Cretan cuisine served in a beautifully restored mansion. Pre-booking is highly recommended!

On the way back, we visited charming Old Hersonissos, just ten minutes from the hotel, where traditional Greek tavernas serve fabulous food.

The following day, we spent two hours in the spa, featuring steam rooms, saunas, massage areas, and the ‘killer’ cold pool and ice room, complete with shocking temperature changes and rain showers infused with oils. Treatments were extensive, including the “Palatial Experience,” which involved a deep exfoliation with carob scrub, a toning massage with essential oils, and a complete facial.

Our final meal was at Eternal Blue, located on the private beach. Dining at sunset with the sound of waves in the background was magical. Lobster, fresh catch of the day, grilled octopus with Cretan herbs, and seafood risotto were highlights, with every detail designed to delight the senses.

Evenings were spent at the Artmitsi Bar, cosying by the fire pit with a cocktail and warm roasted nuts, soaking in incredible sea views and the sunset, while enjoying soothing live music. Its elegant and relaxing atmosphere made it the perfect retreat after a few days of exploring.

I can highly recommend Nana Princess. Discreet, personal service ensures every guest’s needs are anticipated and catered for. You truly feel like a VIP, and the experience offers an unforgettable level of hospitality that exceeds the highest expectations.
